At some point in life, everyone feels a sense of emptiness—a hole in their heart they desperately try to fill. It might come during moments of pain, disappointment, loss, or just a deep, unshakable longing. This empty space drives people to seek fulfillment in many ways, but no matter how hard they try, nothing seems to satisfy it. Whether it’s success, relationships, food, addictions, or material possessions, the emptiness remains. The truth is, this hole is something only Jesus can fill. He is the Perfect One who can satisfy the longing of our souls.
This isn’t just a problem for those who don’t know Christ; even Christians sometimes find themselves trying to fill the void with things other than God. We may know Jesus, but in moments of hurt, confusion, or frustration, we can be tempted to turn to other things to numb the pain or distract ourselves. Whether you’re new to faith or have been a believer for years, the hole is real, and only Jesus is the answer.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV) tells us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” This verse points out that God has placed a sense of eternity in each of us. We were made for more than this temporary world. There’s a longing for the eternal that can’t be satisfied by anything here on earth. It’s why we feel that hole, and it’s why nothing temporal can ever fill it.
We see people all around us trying to satisfy this longing with all sorts of things. Some people try to fill the hole with work or success, thinking if they achieve more, they’ll finally feel whole. Others may turn to food, alcohol, or drugs, using these things as temporary distractions from their deeper need. But the hole remains because it was never meant to be filled by anything of this world.
Scripture gives us many examples of people trying to find fulfillment in things that weren’t designed to satisfy them. Consider the story of the woman at the well in John 4:13-14** (NIV), where Jesus tells her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” This woman had been seeking fulfillment through relationships, but Jesus pointed out that what she truly needed was living water—something only He could provide.
We also see the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. The younger son thought that wealth and freedom from his father’s house would satisfy his desires. He took his inheritance and wasted it all on reckless living, only to find himself more empty than before. In the end, he realized that what he truly needed was to return home to his father. This story shows us how often we chase after things that promise fulfillment but leave us even more lost than we were before.
In the same way, we can get caught up in pursuing things—whether it’s money, approval, relationships, or physical pleasures—that we think will fill our hearts. But just like the woman at the well or the Prodigal Son, nothing will satisfy us but Jesus.
So, what’s the solution? It’s Jesus—the Perfect One who came to fill the emptiness in our lives. He fills the hole in our hearts with His presence, love, and purpose. His love is perfect and complete, and it never fails. Romans 8:38-39 (NIV) says, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” God’s love for us is eternal and never-ending. It is the only thing that will ever truly satisfy us.
When we feel empty, it’s often because we’re looking for fulfillment in the wrong places. But Jesus offers us abundant life. He tells us in John 10:10** (NIV), “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Life to the full means a life overflowing with His love, peace, and joy—not because our circumstances are perfect, but because we have Him.
Even Christians who know Jesus as their Savior can sometimes fall into the trap of trying to fill their lives with things other than Him. Why? Because we forget, we get distracted, or we are in pain. When life is difficult or doesn’t go as planned, we sometimes reach for quick fixes. We might turn to entertainment, shopping, food, or unhealthy relationships to cope. But these things are only temporary. They might make us feel better for a little while, but the hole always returns. Only Jesus can provide the lasting fulfillment we seek.
To live a life that is truly full, we must continually turn to Jesus, letting Him be the one who fills our hearts. Matthew 6:33 (NIV) says, *“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”* When we seek Jesus first, when we prioritize our relationship with Him over everything else, He meets our needs and fills our lives with His love and goodness.
So how do we keep the Perfect One at the center of our lives?
1. Spend time in God’s Word. Let His Word fill your mind and heart. It is through His Word that He reveals Himself to us.
2. Pray continually. Prayer is our lifeline to God. When we stay connected to Him through prayer, we find peace and strength to face whatever comes our way.
3. Worship God in all circumstances. Whether life is good or bad, worship keeps our focus on the One who never changes.
4. Seek fellowship with other believers. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you in your walk with Christ.
5. Serve others. When we focus on serving others, we find fulfillment in living out God’s love in tangible ways.
At the end of the day, the hole in our hearts can only be filled by Jesus—the Perfect One. No matter how much we try to fill it with other things, we will always come up empty. But when we let Jesus fill that void, we experience a life that is full of peace, joy, and purpose. Let’s stop chasing after things that don’t satisfy, and instead, turn to the One who can fill us completely.
