In today’s world, we are often encouraged to plan for our future financially, to invest wisely in retirement funds like a 401(k) to secure our earthly future. But as Christians, we are called to a different kind of investment—a spiritual 401(k), you could say, that focuses on laying up treasures in heaven rather than on earth. Let’s delve into what this means and how we can align our lives with this eternal perspective.
In Matthew 6:19-21 Jesus teaches us(NIV):
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
This foundational scripture highlights the importance of prioritizing eternal investments over temporary ones. Earthly treasures are vulnerable to decay and loss, but heavenly treasures are secure and enduring. What does it mean practically to store up treasures in heaven? It involves living a life of faithfulness, obedience to God’s Word, and sacrificial love for others.
In Revelation 21, we get a glimpse of the new heaven and the new earth that God promises to those who love Him. It describes a place where there is no more pain, suffering, or death—a place of perfect communion with God.
Revelation 21:1-4 (NIV):
“Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’”
Our responsibilities in the new heaven and new earth will involve worshiping God, enjoying His presence, ruling and reigning with Christ with responsibilities based on what on what we did on this side of eternity and experiencing His eternal kingdom in its fullness. This vision motivates us to invest in heavenly treasures today, knowing that our labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).
Scripture also speaks of rewards and crowns that believers will receive in heaven based on their faithfulness and service to God. These are not badges of pride but tokens of God’s recognition and grace.
1 Corinthians 9:25 (NIV):
“Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
Revelation 22:12 (NIV):
“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.”
These crowns symbolize various aspects of faithful Christian living, such as the crown of life (James 1:12), the crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8), and the crown of glory (1 Peter 5:4). They are rewards bestowed by Christ Himself, reflecting His approval of our lives lived for Him.
Now, let’s consider our own spiritual 401(k). What does it look like? Are we actively investing in heavenly treasures, or are we overly focused on earthly pursuits? Are we satisfied with the spiritual investments we are making?
If not, here are some actionable steps to enhance our spiritual investments:
1. Prioritize Spiritual Disciplines: Regularly engage in prayer, study of God’s Word, and fellowship with other believers.
2. Serve Others: Look for opportunities to serve in your church and community, demonstrating Christ’s love through your actions.
3. Share the Gospel: Actively participate in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ, both locally and globally.
4. Live Generously: Use your resources—time, talents, and finances—to bless others and advance God’s kingdom.
5. Seek Eternal Perspective: Continually remind yourself of the eternal value of your actions and decisions.
As we journey through life, let’s remember that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). Let’s strive to live with an eternal perspective, investing in heavenly treasures that will last for eternity. The world may tempt us to focus on temporary gains, but as followers of Christ, we are called to a higher standard—a standard that reflects our belief in the promise of the new heaven and the new earth, where God reigns and His glory fills the earth.
May our lives be a testimony of faithfulness and obedience, as we eagerly await the day when we will hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant! Enter into the joy of your Master” (Matthew 25:23, NIV). Let’s live with purpose and intentionality, knowing that every moment is an opportunity to invest in our spiritual 401(k) and lay up treasures in heaven.
As you reflect on these truths, consider how you can adjust your priorities and actions today to align more closely with God’s kingdom purposes. May God empower and guide you as you seek to honor Him with your life and investments in eternity.
