Your Life Matters

In the vast tapestry of human existence, each life is woven with purpose and significance. Often, we may question our worth or wonder if our lives truly matter in the grand scheme of things. Yet, as Christians, we find assurance and encouragement in God’s Word that affirms the unique value of every individual life.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) tells us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This verse reassures us that our lives are not random or meaningless but intricately designed by God Himself. God’s plans for each person are filled with hope, prosperity, and a future brimming with purpose.

Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV) beautifully describes God’s intimate involvement in forming each individual. From conception, God knew us and had a plan for our lives. Every day is ordained by Him, and our existence is precious to Him: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

When we delve into the original languages of these scripture passages, we find even deeper insights. In Jeremiah 29:11, the Hebrew word for “plans” is “machashabah,” meaning thoughts, plans, or purposes. This shows that God’s plans for us are not just random ideas but carefully thought-out purposes. In Psalm 139:13, the Hebrew word for “knit” is “raqam,” which means to weave or embroider, suggesting God’s detailed and careful work in creating us.

The Bible is full of examples of average, everyday people whom God had great plans for. Take Moses, for instance. Despite his initial reluctance, God chose Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and through the wilderness to the Promised Land (Exodus 3-4). Moses’ life story is a testament to God’s transformative power and His ability to use ordinary individuals for extraordinary purposes.

Or consider David. From humble beginnings as a shepherd boy, David was anointed by God to be king over Israel (1 Samuel 16). Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, David’s faithfulness and dependence on God marked his reign and inspired generations.

Then there’s Paul. Once known as Saul, a persecutor of Christians, Paul’s encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus transformed his life dramatically (Acts 9). Commissioned by God, Paul became a passionate apostle who spread the Gospel throughout the Roman Empire, authoring numerous letters that continue to inspire and instruct believers today.

I love to watch documentaries and read biographies. If you go into the biography section of any bookstore, the shelves are full of books written by, for, or about people and their life stories. So why is your autobiography or mine not on the shelves? Maybe it’s because we are ashamed of parts of our story or the whole story. Perhaps we are very private and don’t want to air our dirty laundry for all to see. Or maybe we don’t think there is anything worth telling.

In movies, heaven is often depicted as having drawers full of files that record and lay out our entire lives or books on a shelf that are our autobiography, written from the day we were born to the day we take our last breath. Regardless of what is in our story, the things included are either chosen by God for us or by us ourselves. Not telling it doesn’t change the reality; it just keeps it to ourselves.

Your life story is a testament to God’s faithfulness and His purpose for you. Taking the time to reflect on and write down your life story is a powerful exercise that not only helps you understand your journey but also allows you to see God’s hand at work throughout your life.

Writing down your life story gives you an opportunity to reflect on the milestones, challenges, and blessings you’ve experienced. It cultivates gratitude for God’s faithfulness in every season. Sometimes, writing about difficult experiences can bring healing and clarity. It allows you to gain perspective on how God has brought you through trials and shaped your character.

Your life story is part of your legacy. Sharing it with others, whether it’s your family, friends, or future generations, can inspire, encourage, and impart wisdom. It’s a way to leave a lasting impact on those around you.

Maybe this has motivated you to write your story, but you don’t know where to begin. Start with your beginnings. Jot down key events and memories from your childhood and early years. Consider your family background, upbringing, and significant milestones. Reflect on pivotal moments in your life — moments of joy, sorrow, success, and challenges. Reflect on how these moments shaped your beliefs, values, and perspectives.

Include your faith journey. Your relationship with God is central to your life story. Write about how you came to know Christ, how your faith has grown, and the ways God has worked in your life spiritually. Write freely. Don’t worry about perfect grammar or structure initially. The goal is to capture your thoughts and memories authentically. You can always revise and refine later. Seek input from others. Consider asking family members or close friends for their perspectives on your life story. Their insights may provide additional clarity and depth.

Your life story is a testimony of God’s faithfulness that can impact future generations. As you reflect on and share your journey, you declare God’s marvelous deeds and His power to work in and through ordinary lives like yours. Psalm 71:17-18 (NIV) says, “Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.”

God is not finished with you yet. He continues to work in and through your life, fulfilling His purposes and plans. Trust Him with your story, knowing that He will bring it to completion according to His perfect will. Philippians 1:6 (NIV) reassures us, “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Reflecting on the lives of biblical figures like Moses, David, and Paul, we see that God can use anyone for His grand purposes, regardless of their past, their doubts, or their limitations. Similarly, your life holds unique significance in God’s eyes. Embrace this truth and live with a sense of purpose, knowing that your experiences, both good and bad, are part of a larger narrative that God is weaving.

So how can you live out your purpose daily? Jesus taught us to serve one another in love (John 13:34-35). Look for opportunities to help and encourage those around you, making a positive impact through your actions and words. Continually seek to grow in your relationship with God. Engage in regular Bible study, prayer, and fellowship with other believers to strengthen your faith and deepen your understanding of God’s Word. God has given each of us unique gifts and talents (1 Peter 4:10-11). Identify your strengths and use them to serve God and others, contributing to the body of Christ and the broader community.

Life will inevitably bring challenges and setbacks, but maintaining hope and faith is crucial. Trust in God’s promises and His faithfulness, knowing that He is with you in every season. Sharing your life story is not just about recounting events; it’s about sharing the lessons learned, the faith developed, and the ways God has moved in your life. Your story can be a powerful tool for evangelism, encouragement, and discipleship.

When you share your story, you testify to God’s goodness and faithfulness. This can inspire others to seek God and trust in His promises. Sharing your story fosters deeper connections with others. It helps build a community of believers who support and encourage one another. Your story can give hope to those facing similar challenges. It shows that God can bring healing, restoration, and purpose from even the most difficult circumstances.

Your life matters because God has ordained it with purpose and significance. Your journey — with all its joys and challenges — is a testament to God’s faithfulness, grace, and transformative power. Take the time to reflect on and write down your life story, knowing that it is a valuable testimony of God’s work in your life. As you embrace your God-given purpose, may you continue to trust in His plans, walk in His ways, and impact others for His glory. Your life matters, not just for now, but for eternity in God’s kingdom
