Have you ever stopped to think about the passing of time in our lives? It’s kind of like watching the sand slowly trickle through an hourglass, isn’t it? When I was growing up my mother watched a daytime soap opera called Day of our Lives. They began the show by showing an hourglass with sand trickling down and the iconic phrase was: “Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.” This phrase came to my mind a few days ago and I could hardly get it out of my mind.
Just picture it: the sands slipping gradually, steadily downward, with each grain marking the passage of time. It’s a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life itself.
You know, it’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of our daily routines, isn’t it? We wake up, go through our routines, and before we know it, another day has passed. But here’s the thing: our time on this earth is limited. Just like the sand in that hourglass, our days are numbered, and none of us knows exactly how many grains are left.
That’s why it’s so important to make the most of every moment we’ve been given. As Christians, we’re called to live our lives with purpose and intention, making a difference in the world around us and sharing the love of Christ wherever we go.
In James 4:14, we’re reminded that “life is like a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” It’s a sobering thought, isn’t it? Our time here is fleeting, but that doesn’t mean it’s insignificant. On the contrary, it’s an opportunity—a gift from God—to make a meaningful impact during our brief sojourn on earth.
So, how can we make the most of our time? Well, for starters, we can prioritize our relationship with God and invest in the things that truly matter. That means spending time in prayer, studying His Word, and seeking His guidance in all that we do.
But it also means living with a sense of urgency, seizing each day as an opportunity to love and serve others. After all, we never know when our time here will come to an end, so let’s make every moment count.
I have a neighbor who is dying from cancer. He was told that he would be lucky if he made it to Christmas. Christmas came and went, and he was told that January was going to be the end for sure, then it was February and here we are in April and guess what he is still here. The bible says that our days on this earth are numbered but the only one who knows when our last breath will be taken is God.
In Ephesians 5:15-16, we’re encouraged to “be careful how we live, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity.” That’s sound advice, isn’t it? Let’s be intentional about how we use our time, investing it in things that have eternal significance.
So, as we watch the sands slowly trickle through the hourglass of our lives, let’s remember to cherish each moment, live with purpose, and make the most of the time we’ve been given. After all, when the last grain falls, may we be able to look back with no regrets, knowing that we’ve lived our lives fully for Christ.
