A Call to Urgency

I want to talk about something that’s been weighing on my heart lately – the idea of comfortable Christianity. You see, as followers of Christ, it’s easy to fall into the trap of seeking comfort and ease in our faith journey. But is that really what the Christian life is supposed to look like?

Let’s take a closer look at what the Bible says about the life of a Christian. In John 16:33, Jesus Himself tells us, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” He doesn’t promise us a life of comfort and ease; in fact, He warns us that we will face trials and tribulations because of our faith.

Throughout history, we see countless examples of Christians who endured great hardships and persecution because they were unashamedly sharing the gospel. Take the apostle Paul, for instance – he faced beatings, imprisonment, and ultimately martyrdom because of his commitment to spreading the good news of Jesus Christ.

But despite the difficulties they faced, these faithful believers remained steadfast in their faith and unwavering in their commitment to the gospel. They understood that following Christ meant taking up their cross daily and being willing to endure hardship for the sake of the gospel.

In 2 Timothy 3:12, Paul reminds us, “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” This is not meant to scare us, but rather to prepare us for the reality of what it means to follow Christ in a fallen world.

In the United States in 2024, Christians may not face the same level of persecution and martyrdom as in some other parts of the world, but there are still ways in which they can be considered martyrs for their faith. Here are a few examples:

1. Social Rejection: In a culture that often promotes values and beliefs contrary to the teachings of Christianity, believers may face social rejection or ostracism for standing firm in their faith. This could manifest in various ways, such as being excluded from certain social circles or facing ridicule and mockery for their beliefs.

2. Professional Consequences: In some professional settings, expressing one’s Christian beliefs openly can lead to discrimination or even repercussions such as being passed over for promotions or job opportunities. This is especially true in industries or fields where there is strong opposition to Christian values.

3. Legal Challenges: As secularism continues to rise in various spheres of society, Christians may encounter legal challenges to their religious freedom and expression. This could include lawsuits or legal battles over issues such as conscientious objection to participating in activities that go against their religious beliefs.

4. Cultural Marginalization: The increasing secularization of society can lead to the marginalization of Christian beliefs and values in the public sphere. This can make it challenging for Christians to openly practice their faith or share their beliefs without facing criticism or backlash from the broader culture.

5. Spiritual Warfare: While not always visible or tangible, Christians are engaged in spiritual warfare against forces that oppose the Gospel and seek to undermine their faith. This can manifest in struggles against doubt, temptation, and spiritual attacks that seek to weaken their commitment to Christ.

Despite these challenges, Christians in the United States have the opportunity to demonstrate their faith with courage and resilience. They can find strength in the words of Jesus, who said in Matthew 5:11-12, “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

In the face of opposition and adversity, Christians can stand firm in their faith, knowing that they are called to be witnesses for Christ in every aspect of their lives. They can draw inspiration from the example of martyrs throughout history who remained faithful even unto death, trusting in the promise of eternal reward and the ultimate victory of Christ over sin and death.

As we look around us today, we see the signs of the times – many in the world have left their faith, and there is increasing hostility toward the gospel and what it stands for. But rather than shrinking back in fear or seeking comfort in our own lives, we are called to respond with urgency.

Our time on earth is but a vapor, and Jesus is coming back soon. We have a limited window of opportunity to share the gospel and save as many souls as we can. It’s like a burning building – will we stand by and watch as people perish, or will we rush in with urgency to rescue them from the flames?

Let’s heed the call to urgency, my friends. Let’s be willing to step out of our comfort zones, endure hardship for the sake of the gospel, and boldly proclaim the truth of God’s Word to a world in desperate need of hope and salvation. As we do, let’s trust that God will use us to make an eternal impact for His kingdom.

I am reminded of one of the prophets who displayed an urgency to the message God told him to deliver to the people. Jeremiah, known as the “weeping prophet,” was called by God to proclaim a message of judgment and repentance to the people of Israel. Despite facing rejection, persecution, and ridicule, Jeremiah remained faithful to his calling and delivered God’s message with unwavering urgency.

In Jeremiah 20:9, he declares, “But if I say, ‘I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,’ his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.”

Jeremiah’s example serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of urgency in sharing God’s message with others. Like Jeremiah, we are called to boldly proclaim the truth of God’s Word, even in the face of opposition and persecution. We cannot afford to remain silent or complacent while souls are in jeopardy.

While Christians in the United States may not face the same level of persecution and martyrdom as in some other parts of the world, we still encounter various challenges and opposition for our faith. Whether it’s social rejection, professional consequences, legal challenges, cultural marginalization, or spiritual warfare, believers must navigate these obstacles with courage and resilience.

However, in the midst of adversity, Christians can find strength and encouragement in the promises of God and the example of Christ and the martyrs who have gone before them. We are called to stand firm in our faith, boldly proclaiming the Gospel and living out our beliefs with conviction, even in the face of opposition.

Ultimately, as followers of Christ, Christians are called to embrace a life of sacrificial love and commitment, knowing that our ultimate allegiance is to Jesus. And in the midst of challenges and trials, we can take heart in the assurance that our faithfulness will be rewarded, both in this life and in the life to come.
