Have you ever felt like life is pulling you in a hundred different directions? Your kids, spouse, work, school, church and so many people need you, your time and your attention. Then if we add the state of our country, the fact that it’s an election year and the economy is not so good, it may seem like you are getting hit from all sides. Do you ever feel like you’re being tossed about on a stormy sea, unsure which way to turn? It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and confused in a world filled with chaos and uncertainty. But as Christians, we are called to be anchored in our faith, unwavering in our beliefs, and steadfast in our journey with Christ.
In Ephesians 4:14, Paul writes, “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.” This imagery of being tossed back and forth by waves reminds us of the importance of standing firm in our faith, not allowing ourselves to be swayed by the ever-changing tides of culture or the deceptive teachings of the world.
Scripture is filled with reminders that our lives as Christians should not be characterized by chaos or confusion. Psalm 46:10 encourages us to “be still, and know that I am God.” Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding, acknowledging Him in all our ways so He can direct our paths.
So, how can we be steady and focused on what we believe, even when life feels like a turbulent sea? It starts with anchoring ourselves in God’s Word and prayer, seeking His guidance and wisdom in every decision and circumstance. We must cultivate a deep, personal relationship with Christ, rooted in faith and trust, so that when the storms of life come, we can stand firm on the solid foundation of His truth.
When you feel tossed about like on a ship, remember the example of Peter walking on water. In Matthew 14:29-30, Peter stepped out of the boat and walked towards Jesus on the water. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink. However, as soon as he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out His hand and caught him.
Like Peter, when we feel overwhelmed and uncertain, we must cry out to Jesus for help. We must fix our eyes on Him, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), and trust that He will lead us safely through the storms of life. When we follow His guidance and cling to His promises, we can navigate life’s challenges with confidence, knowing that He is our anchor in the midst of the storm.
It is important to surround yourself with a good Christian community, like your church, to help us stay anchored. Galatians 6:2 says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Don’t just attend church, surround yourself with the people of your church by joining a small group, serving in the church, or reaching out to fellow believers for support.
So, let’s anchor ourselves in faith, standing firm on the unchanging truth of God’s Word. Hebrews 6:19 says “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”Let’s trust in His promises, seek His guidance, and remain steadfast in our journey with Christ. And when life’s storms rage around us, let’s remember to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, our anchor of hope in the midst of chaos.
