Trusting Your Spiritual Translator

It’s that time of year where Christians all over the world have made a commitment to read the bible more with many setting a goal to read it from beginning to end. Reading the Bible can sometimes feel like navigating a foreign language. The complexity, historical context, and cultural nuances can be overwhelming. Yet, fear not, for just as you would rely on a skilled translator in a foreign land, God has blessed His church with pastors. These shepherds guide us through the intricate terrain of Scripture, helping us comprehend its depth and meaning.

Scriptural Insight (Nehemiah 8:8):

In Nehemiah 8:8, we witness a scene where the people, after years of exile, gathered to hear the reading of the Law. “They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.” This verse emphasizes the importance of understanding the Word of God.

Pastoral Example (Acts 8:30-31):

Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch illustrate the necessity of guidance in understanding Scripture (Acts 8:30-31). Philip, prompted by the Spirit, explained the passage to the eunuch, unlocking its meaning. Similarly, pastors serve as guides, unveiling the richness of God’s Word.

Biblical Mandate (1 Timothy 4:13, Titus 1:9):

Paul instructs Timothy, “Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching” (1 Timothy 4:13). In Titus 1:9, he outlines a qualification for a pastor, stating they must “hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine.” God, through these commands, emphasizes the role of pastors as faithful interpreters of His Word.

Pastoral Guidance (Jeremiah 3:15):

Jeremiah 3:15 states, “And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.” Pastors are appointed by God to shepherd His people, providing spiritual nourishment and understanding of His Word.

Embracing Trust (Hebrews 13:17):

Hebrews 13:17 encourages believers to “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.” Trusting our spiritual leaders includes trusting their interpretation of Scripture.

Pastoral Intercession (Ephesians 6:19-20):

Paul, in Ephesians 6:19-20, requests prayers “also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.” Pastors, through prayer and communion with God, seek clarity and boldness in interpreting His Word.

Scriptural Illumination (Psalm 119:130):

“The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130). Pastors, committed to God’s Word, rely on divine illumination to guide their interpretations, ensuring that the light of understanding shines on congregations.

Just as a skilled translator guides you through the intricacies of a foreign language, pastors are appointed by God to navigate the complexities of His Word. Trusting your spiritual translator requires faith, recognizing their role as shepherds appointed by God. While you may not comprehend every detail, the assurance lies in the reliability of their guidance, steeped in prayer, biblical knowledge, and a heart devoted to God.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the pastors You have placed in our lives. Grant them wisdom and discernment as they guide us through the depths of Your Word. Help us to trust our spiritual translators, knowing that they are devoted to Your truth. May our hearts be receptive to Your Word, and may we grow in understanding and obedience. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
