Defining Ourselves in Six Words

I recently participated in a biblical course where the instructor asked us to define ourselves in six words. Armed with a piece of paper, I wrote down various sets of words until I found the six that felt encapsulated me best. Following this exercise, the instructor encouraged us to do the same for Jesus. Upon comparing my self-description with the words, I chose for Jesus, it became clear that my list needed reconsideration. The speaker’s words resonated with me, prompting self-reflection on the six words that truly defined who I am.

If you could choose just six words to describe yourself, what would they be? In this reflection, let’s explore the significance of this concise self-definition and discover how we can use biblical words to paint a meaningful picture of who we are.

Describing yourself in only six words might seem challenging, but it forces you to focus on what truly defines you. It’s an opportunity to consider your character, values, and beliefs, using biblical words to add depth and meaning to your self-description.

Would you choose some or all of these words?

1. Loved – Choose this word to emphasize God’s boundless love for you. Romans 5:8 reminds us: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”, 1 John 4:19 “We love because he first loved us.” God’s love for humanity is shown in the story of Jesus’ sacrifice, when He took the punishment for our sins through His own death.

2. Forgiven – Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and the transformative power of God’s grace. Ephesians 1:7 states: “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” and Psalm 103:12 “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” The story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) and the woman caught in adultery (John 8: 1-11) shows God’s forgiveness.

3. Compassionate – Reflect the compassion you’ve received from God and extend it to others. Colossians 3:12 encourages us: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” and Psalm 86:15 “But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.” The story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) illustrates the type of compassion we should have for others.

4. Faithful – Embrace the faithfulness of God and aim to mirror it in your own life. 2 Timothy 2:13 assures us: “if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.”, and Deuteronomy 7:9 “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” The story of Abraham’s faith in God (Genesis 22:1-18) could be used as a model for us to follow.

5. Servant – Model your life after Christ, who came to serve. Mark 10:45 tells us: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” and Philippians 2:7 “Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Are you willing to be the type of servant as Jesus was in the example he set when He washed the disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17)? What a powerful example.

6. Hopeful – Hold onto hope as an anchor for your soul, just as Hebrews 6:19 says: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,” and Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” There is no greater example of hope than the one set in the story of the resurrection (Luke 24:1-12).

Defining yourself in six words is a meaningful exercise. By choosing biblical words, you’re not only describing your character but also aligning your self-definition with God’s truth. You are loved, forgiven, compassionate, faithful, a servant, and hopeful. These words not only describe who you are but also reflect the transformative work of God in your life. So, as you choose these six words, remember that they are a testament to the power of God’s grace and love within you.
