The age-old saying “hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil” is familiar to many, often illustrated by three monkeys covering their eyes, ears, and mouths. In a spiritual context, we should seek a different perspective—one that invites us to open our eyes to see the lost and hurting, open our ears to hear the pain of others, and open our hearts to love people as Jesus does. Let’s explore the significance of this daily prayer.
In our daily lives, it’s easy to become preoccupied with our own concerns and miss the suffering and needs of those around us. To see like Jesus is to open our eyes to the lost, the marginalized, and the hurting. It is to look beyond the surface and recognize the deeper struggles that others may be facing.
Matthew 9:36 (NIV) provides insight into Jesus’s perspective: “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
Hearing like Jesus means opening our ears to the pain and cries of those around us. It’s about actively listening to the struggles and sorrows that others may not express openly. When we truly listen, we create a space for healing and empathy.
James 1:19 (NIV) encourages us to be quick to listen and slow to speak: “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.”
Loving like Jesus goes beyond superficial gestures. It means opening our hearts to others without judgment or prejudice. It is a selfless, sacrificial love that mirrors Christ’s love for us. By loving like Jesus, we extend compassion, grace, and understanding.
John 13:34-35 (NIV) reminds us of Christ’s command: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”
I believe that to open our eyes, ears, and hearts to the world and others, it begins with our Christian education and training. This education is acquired through our participation in church services, engaging in small groups, and the time we invest in personal Bible reading and study. In the age of constant digital distractions, it’s essential for us to maintain a focused faith during church services, Bible studies, and personal scripture reading. While technology can be a valuable tool, it can also become a barrier to receiving God’s message. We need to cultivate a habit of prayer and presence during these moments, avoiding the temptation to check Facebook, respond to emails, or text others. Instead, let’s open our eyes, ears, and hearts to what God is trying to tell us.
When attending church services, our pastors are guided by the Holy Spirit to deliver messages that can profoundly impact our lives. Yet, it’s easy to let our minds wander, allowing worldly distractions to pull us away from the sacred moment. We must make a conscious effort to stay present, engage with the sermon, and pray for spiritual receptiveness.
Bible studies provide an opportunity for deeper exploration of God’s Word. These sessions are times of learning and fellowship, and our engagement is crucial. Let’s choose to set aside our devices, focus on the discussion, and pray for wisdom and understanding as we study together.
When reading the Bible privately, we have a unique chance for intimacy with God. It’s during these moments that we can hear His voice speaking directly to our hearts. To fully benefit from this experience, we must create a quiet, focused environment, turning off digital distractions, and opening ourselves to His message.
James 1:22 (NIV) encourages us to be doers of the Word, not just hearers: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
In our walk of faith, being present and attentive during church services, Bible studies, and personal scripture reading is essential. We should use technology wisely, avoiding the urge to check our devices during these sacred moments. Let’s remember to open our eyes, ears, and hearts to what God is trying to tell us, for His message can transform our lives and strengthen our faith.
Pray This Daily Prayer:
“Lord, open my eyes to see the lost and hurt, open my ears to hear the pain of others, and open my heart to love people like Jesus does. Help me to live out your love and compassion in my daily life. Amen.”
As Christians, we are called to see, hear, and love like Jesus. This daily prayer is a reminder that our faith is not passive but active, rooted in love and empathy for those around us. By opening our eyes, ears, and hearts, we can be instruments of Christ’s love and bring hope to a world in need.
