The Piece of Paper

It’s amusing how a mere piece of paper can sometimes carry so much weight in our lives. Whether it’s a diploma, a marriage license, a divorce decree, an adoption certificate, or a college degree, these documents can often define us in the eyes of the world. However, as Christians, our true identity should be anchored not in the paper the world gives us but in our relationship with God. Let’s delve into Scripture to understand why.

Galatians 3:26 (NIV) “For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.”

Ephesians 1:4-5 (NIV) “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love, he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

The World’s Piece of Paper vs. God’s Identity for Us:

Diplomas and Degrees vs. Chosen Children:

   – The world may recognize us for our academic achievements, but God sees us as His chosen children through faith. Our true identity is rooted in being part of God’s family.

Marriage Licenses and Divorce Decrees vs. Adopted Sons and Daughters:

   – While marriage and divorce papers reflect earthly relationships, God’s Word reminds us that we are adopted into His family through Christ. Our status as His sons and daughters transcends any legal document.

It’s natural to seek approval and validation from the world and even from people around us. However, as Christians, we must remember that our ultimate approval comes from God. Here’s how we can lean on His approval rather than the world’s piece of paper:

1. Seek God’s Will First: In every decision and life event, seek God’s will before seeking the approval of others or society.

2. Find Identity in Christ: As believers, our identity is in Christ, who we become in Him is more important than any earthly title or label.

3. Remember God’s Unconditional Love: Rest in the knowledge that God’s love and acceptance of you are not based on worldly achievements but on His grace and mercy.

4. Value Eternal Rewards: Shift your focus from temporal accolades to eternal rewards. Seek to serve God faithfully rather than seeking recognition from people.

In a world that often defines us by the pieces of paper it bestows upon us, let us remember our true identity as Christians. We are children of God, chosen, adopted, and made new in Christ. Our worth is not determined by worldly documents but by our relationship with our Heavenly Father. As you go about your life, may you find your approval and identity in Him, and may His love and acceptance be your greatest treasure.
