Morality can be defined as a set of principles or values that guide human conduct and distinguish between right and wrong behavior. It encompasses concepts like honesty, integrity, compassion, and justice. It is a fundamental aspect of human behavior, guiding our choices between right and wrong. Throughout history, the definition of morality has evolved, influenced by societal changes, and shifting cultural norms. In this devotional, we’ll explore the concept of morality, examine how society’s perspective has evolved, consider what the Bible says about it, and underscore its importance to God.
As Christians, our perspective on morality should differ from that of non-Christians. This difference is rooted in our faith and the teachings of Jesus Christ. We are called to seek to align our moral compass with the teachings of Jesus, study His life, His teachings, and the principles found in the Bible. Once we aligned with God then we are called to engage in open, respectful conversations with non-Christians about morality, share our perspective, to be grounded in your faith, and be willing to listen to theirs.
While society’s definition of morality may shift, God’s standard remains unwavering. The Bible serves as a timeless guide, offering principles and commandments that reflect God’s unchanging moral character. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)
My thoughts are that many Christians do not believe in what the bible says and does not stand united on what God’s word tell us about morality. Listed below are a few examples of Christian morals distinctly different from Non-Christians:
1. Love for Enemies: In Matthew 5:44, Jesus instructs His followers to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them. This Christian moral principle goes beyond conventional societal norms, which often advocate retaliation or indifference towards adversaries.
2. Forgiveness: Christianity places a strong emphasis on forgiveness, inspired by Christ’s teachings. Christians are encouraged to forgive others as God forgives them (Ephesians 4:32), even when forgiveness may not be expected or deserved.
3. Sexual Purity: The Christian moral stance on sexual purity is rooted in biblical teachings that advocate abstinence before marriage and faithfulness within marriage (1 Corinthians 6:18-20, Hebrews 13:4). This differs from secular perspectives that may prioritize personal desires and choices over biblical guidelines.
4. Truthfulness: Christians are encouraged to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and avoid falsehood (Ephesians 4:25). While honesty is valued in various cultures, the Christian emphasis on absolute truth and integrity sets a higher standard.
5. Stewardship: Christian morality often includes principles of responsible stewardship, emphasizing the wise and ethical management of resources, finances, and the environment, based on the belief that everything ultimately belongs to God (Psalm 24:1). This may contrast with secular views that prioritize individual gain or exploitation.
6. Sanctity of Life: Many Christians uphold the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death, aligning with biblical teachings (Psalm 139:13-16). This can lead to differing perspectives on issues such as abortion and euthanasia.
7. Humility: Christianity promotes humility as a virtue (Philippians 2:3-4), encouraging believers to consider others as more significant than themselves. While humility is appreciated universally, the Christian approach often goes beyond mere modesty, emphasizing a servant-hearted attitude.
8. Hope and Faith: Christian morality fosters hope and faith in God’s promises, even in the face of adversity (Romans 12:12). This perspective contrasts with secular worldviews that may rely solely on human effort and logic.
These examples illustrate how Christian morals, grounded in biblical teachings and faith in Christ, can differ from secular or non-Christian perspectives on various ethical and moral issues. It’s important to note that while there may be differences, Christians are called to engage respectfully and lovingly with others, sharing the reasons for their moral convictions and, ultimately, reflecting the love of Christ in their interactions.
God places great importance on morality. Throughout the Bible, we find numerous passages that emphasize the need for moral living, love for others, and adherence to His commandments. I want to encourage you to spend time studying and meditating on God’s Word to gain a deeper understanding of His moral principles, Reflect on your own moral choices and actions. Are they aligned with God’s standard?
Although morality is sometimes subject to shifting sands, we can find stability and guidance in God’s unchanging standard. As we align our lives with His principles, we not only live in a way that honors Him but also become beacons of light and love in a changing world. Morality, as defined by God’s Word, serves as our compass, guiding us in making choices that reflect His character and lead to a life of purpose and fulfillment.
