The saying, “Medicine and advice are two things more pleasant to give than to receive,” holds a profound truth. While offering counsel and guidance to others can be rewarding, being on the receiving end often challenges our pride and independence. In this devotional, we will explore the importance of receiving advice from others with an open heart and the wisdom of Scripture that supports this principle.
Proverbs 12:15 (NIV) The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”
Why We Should Take Advice from Others?
Humility before Wisdom: Proverbs 11:2 (NIV) teaches us, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” Embracing advice from others requires humility—an acknowledgment that we don’t have all the answers and can benefit from the wisdom of those around us.
Learning from Experience: Many who offer advice have walked through similar experiences and learned valuable lessons. By listening, we can tap into their wisdom, avoiding unnecessary pitfalls and mistakes (Proverbs 13:20).
Expanding Our Perspective: Proverbs 15:22 (NIV) states, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed.” Seeking advice allows us to see situations from different angles, which can lead to better-informed decisions.
Accountability and Growth: When we invite others into our decision-making process, we create a form of accountability. This accountability encourages growth and helps us stay on a path of wisdom and righteousness (Proverbs 27:17).
Godly Counsel: Seeking advice from those who align with God’s Word provides an opportunity to receive godly counsel. Proverbs 19:20 (NIV) advises, “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end, you will be counted among the wise.”
Embrace the Gift of Advice. While giving advice can be a gift to others, receiving advice is a gift to ourselves. It reflects a heart open to learning, growing, and making informed decisions. As we journey through life, let’s remember the wisdom found in Proverbs 19:21 (NIV): “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.”
May we humbly and wisely seek advice from those around us, understanding that by doing so, we tap into a wealth of knowledge and experience that can guide us toward God’s purpose and wisdom in our lives.
