Let’s dive into the timeless wisdom of a song by The Rolling Stones, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” and explore it from a Christian perspective. Life can be a journey full of surprises, and sometimes we find ourselves facing situations where our desires don’t align with God’s plans.
In Philippians 4:19, the Apostle Paul reminds us, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” This reassures us that God knows what we truly need, even when it doesn’t match what we think we want. A beautiful example of this is found in the story of Joseph.
Joseph was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, a situation he surely didn’t desire. Yet, through God’s providence, he rose to prominence in Egypt and ultimately saved his family during a severe famine (Genesis 37-50). His journey wasn’t what he wanted, but it became a blessing that transformed his life and the lives of many others.
Similarly, we can’t forget about Jonah. He initially wanted to flee from God’s calling and ended up in the belly of a great fish (Jonah 1-2). However, God’s redirection led him to fulfill his mission, and his obedience brought about the salvation of the people of Nineveh.
Remember, Jesus Himself experienced the ultimate example of not getting what He might have wanted in the Garden of Gethsemane. He prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). His surrender led to the salvation of humanity through His sacrifice on the cross.
So, when life doesn’t align with your desires, lean into the words of Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” The Rolling Stones remind us that we can’t always get what we want, but God promises to provide what we need. Just as Joseph and Jonah discovered, His plans are higher and more fulfilling than we can imagine.
We can ask God to help us embrace His plans for our lives, even when they differ from our desires. We need faith to trust in God’s wisdom and provision, knowing that His ways are perfect. May we find contentment and joy in following His path, just as Jesus did.
In our journey of faith, we may not always get what we want, but God’s plans are far more extraordinary than we can envision.
