The Power of Respect: Honoring God and Others

Scripture: “Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.” (1 Peter 2:17)

In a world that often seems consumed by self-centeredness and disregard for others, the Bible calls us to a higher standard of living—one characterized by respect. Culture is constantly evolving, and attitudes toward showing respect have undergone notable changes over the years. While it is challenging to provide an exhaustive account of all cultural shifts, I can highlight some general trends that have influenced our understanding and practice of respect in recent times.

1. Individualism and Self-Expression:

In many societies, there has been an increased emphasis on individual rights, self-expression, and personal autonomy. This shift has influenced the way respect is understood and practiced. Respect is now often viewed as an acknowledgment of individuality, where people expect to be respected for their unique identities, beliefs, and choices.

2. Equality and Inclusion:

There has been a growing focus towards equality and inclusion. Respect now encompasses treating all individuals with dignity, regardless of factors such as gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or socioeconomic status. There is an emphasis on rejecting discriminatory practices and striving for a more inclusive and respectful environment.

3. Empathy and Emotional Intelligence:

In recent years, there has been an increased focus on empathy and emotional intelligence. Respect is now seen as not just a matter of manners or politeness but also an understanding and valuing of others’ feelings, perspectives, and experiences. There are TONS of courses, webinars and events that you go that discuss emotional intelligence and how important it is.

4.Changing Communication Norms:

Advancements in technology and the rise of social media have significantly influenced communication norms. While these platforms have provided opportunities for connection and understanding, they have also brought new challenges. Respectful communication in the digital age involves navigating issues such as online harassment, cyberbullying, and the need for mindful and respectful dialogue amid differing opinions.

Society has an opinion on what respect and how we should show it but I wanted to share you with what the Bible says about the topic. Let’s explore the significance of respect as we dive into the depths of God’s Word.

1. Showing Proper Respect:

The apostle Peter exhorts us to show “proper respect” to everyone around us. Let us ponder the multifaceted nature of respect as we delve into the various translations of 1 Peter 2:17:

a) “Show proper respect to everyone…” (NIV)

b) “Honor all people…” (NASB)

c) “Give honor to all people…” (NLT)

d) “Respect everyone…” (ESV)

Respect is an attitude that should permeate our interactions with every individual we encounter, regardless of their background, social status, or beliefs. When we choose to honor others, we reflect the image of Christ in us.

2. Honoring Authority:

Peter continues by emphasizing the importance of respecting authority figures, instructing believers to “fear God” and “honor the emperor.” Let us draw inspiration from biblical accounts where respect for authority brought about both positive and negative outcomes:

a) Respect Rewarded:

Joseph, despite enduring injustice and false accusations, consistently displayed respect toward Potiphar, Pharaoh, and even his fellow prisoners. Eventually, his respectful character led to his promotion and the saving of an entire nation (Genesis 39-41).

b) Disrespect’s Consequences:

King Saul’s disobedience and lack of respect for God’s commands led to his downfall. As a result, the kingdom was torn from him, and he lost his anointing as king (1 Samuel 13:8-14).

These stories illustrate the profound impact that respect—or the lack thereof—can have on our lives and the lives of those around us.

3. The Ultimate Example:

As we strive to embrace respect in our daily lives, we look to Jesus Christ as our ultimate example. He perfectly embodied honor, humility, and love, even when faced with mistreatment and betrayal.

Jesus treated people with respect, regardless of their societal standing. He dined with tax collectors, washed the feet of His disciples, and showed compassion to the marginalized. His interactions with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:1-42) and His forgiveness of the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11) highlight His unwavering respect for all individuals.

By following Jesus’ example, we can transform our communities, workplaces, and families into places of honor, dignity, and respect.

Pray that God will help you to cultivate hearts of respect, enabling you to honor and uplift those around you. May your lives reflect the love and humility of Christ, as you acknowledge the inherent worth of every person you encounter. May God grant you the strength to show respect, even in challenging circumstances.

As we go forth today, let us be intentional about treating others with respect, love, and honor. Through our actions, may we bring glory to God and be a living testimony of His transformative power. Remember, respect has the power to change lives, mend relationships, and reveal Christ’s love to a hurting world. May we embrace the call to respect with open hearts and willing spirits.
